How to Prepare Your Child for September in Just 6 Weeks

Six weeks sounds like plenty of time. Then you blink and it's late August, and you haven't done half of what you planned.

The truth is, September preparation doesn't require months of planning. It requires focus. Here's what actually matters in the weeks before your child returns to school.

Start with confidence, not cramming

Your child doesn't need intensive tutoring or pressure over the summer. What they need is to feel ready. Confidence matters far more than perfect knowledge.

Ask your child what they're worried about. Are they nervous about new teachers?

Meeting new friends? Specific subjects?

Once you know what's causing anxiety, you can address it directly rather than guessing.

Keep reading alive

Of all summer activities, reading protects learning the most. Children who read regularly don't fall behind. They progress.

Let your child choose what to read. Library visits, graphic novels, audiobooks—anything that keeps the reading habit alive. Even 15 minutes daily makes a difference.

Practise basic skills, gently

For primary students moving to secondary, times tables and basic numeracy matter.

For those staying in primary, reinforce what they learned last year.

Keep it light. Play maths games, calculate pocket money, measure ingredients whilst cooking. These feel like normal activities, not homework.

Visit the new school if you can

Many schools hold summer visits or transition days. Attend these if possible. Familiarity reduces anxiety.

If formal visits aren't available, walk past the building, look at the website together, or ask older siblings about their experience. Small actions normalise the change.

Know when to get support

If your child struggles with specific subjects or anxiety about the transition feels overwhelming, summer is the perfect time for targeted support.

A few sessions with a tutor can fill knowledge gaps and build confidence without pressure. Many families find this removes stress from the whole summer.

Enjoy the break too

September preparation matters, but so does actual rest. Your child needs downtime, play, and adventure. Balance practical preparation with genuine holiday time.

The six weeks work best when they're a mix of gentle learning, family time, and fun.
