I’m not going to lie… this past week has been tough. 🫤

I’ve been unwell for over a week now and just can’t seem to shift this cold.

Work has had to take a back seat, and I’ve been stepping away from my desk in the mornings so I still have the energy to teach my lessons in the afternoons.

There seems to be so much going around at the moment - lots of students are unwell, bugs are everywhere, the temperature has dropped and the constant rain isn’t helping either.

I’m currently getting ready for a really exciting trip to New Zealand, and it’s reminded me just how much planning goes into everything we do well!

(Please, please send me your NZ recommendations 🌍 - I am in full planning mode right now!!)

I actually love packing.

I lay everything out neatly and organise it all into my packing cubes - one for clothes, one for toiletries, one for “just in case” bits. 🧳

It all looks so calm and under control…

…until I hit the luggage weight limit. 😅

Suddenly, I’m having to make decisions:

Do I really need three pairs of trainers?

What if the weather’s different to what I expect?

What if I haven’t packed something important?

It can get frustrating when I’m not exactly sure what I’ll need, or when I realise I can’t take everything “just in case”.

🗺️ That’s when I sit down, take a breath, and make a proper plan of what’s essential… and what’s just weighing me down.

Believe it or not, this is very similar to how many students feel about English and maths:

There’s so much stuff to remember

They’re not sure what they’ll actually need for their end-of-term assessment or exam

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lose confidence

Just like my suitcase, if we try to shove everything in without a plan, it quickly gets too heavy and stressful.

That’s where planning and being prepared make all the difference. ✏️

In my tuition, I help students to:

⭐ Organise their maths topics like “packing cubes” for number, algebra, shape, etc.

⭐ Work out what’s essential for them to focus on, especially if they’re aiming for that grade 4 pass at GCSE

⭐ Build a simple, realistic plan, so they don’t feel like they’re carrying everything at once

⭐ Grow in confidence, knowing they’re properly prepared rather than guessing what might come up

From Zoom to real life! 🤍

In October, I headed to London for the TTA National Tutors Conference and met up with lots of wonderful fellow tutors.

But the day before, I had something extra special planned… I got to meet a real-life client in person! 💛

I’ve been working with Amalie for the last year and a half, and it was so lovely to finally meet her off Zoom and in 3D!

We’ve had many online sessions together, but there’s something truly special about chatting face-to-face.

We went for a lovely lunch by the river in London (very kindly treated by Amalie). We talked all things tuition, business growth, city vs country life, and even travelling around New Zealand!

Modern technology is incredible... it allows us to connect with students and families all over the world. But, meeting in person is such a powerful reminder of the relationships behind the screen.

Thank you, Amalie, for a wonderful lunch and for being such a joy to work with. 💛

This week has been all about planning ahead.

In December, I’m taking some extended time off over Christmas – a whole month away from my business.

If I’m honest… that really scares me.

So I’ve been spending lots of time getting marketing and social media posts planned ready for while I’m away, so Tutoring with Portia can still show up online while I enjoy some much-needed time off.

There will be things that don’t happen.

I’ll miss out on making sales during some of the busiest weeks of the year at the start of January.

But I’m slowly coming to terms with that being okay.

Because I’ll be having time off and freedom that was never possible when I taught in schools... and that matters more to me than squeezing in every last booking.

This week has also been the week of finally starting my tax return… something I’ve been putting off all year 🙈

(Don’t be fooled though – it is absolutely NOT finished and there is still SO much to do!)

One thing I do know about myself though, is that I work very well when I have a deadline:

I become more productive

Things get done quicker

And I always make the deadline – I really don’t like being late (not always a good trait 😅)

A busy week, but a productive one.

Now for a restful weekend… and I may even start packing for our trip! 🧳

It’s been a full week! 💚

People have been enjoying my weekly round-ups, so I’m going to keep writing them!

I’ve really loved using them as a way to reflect on my week… it’s been helpful to pause, look back and notice just how much I’ve actually done. 💚

🧠 Monday

The week started with a Monday mindset call in my coaching membership.

I’ve been really honest this week about some mindset struggles around business and growth… if you haven’t seen it yet, you can read more in one of my earlier posts this week.

💻 Tuesday

Tuesday brought the Cloudflare issues which meant my whole scheduling, payment and calendar system went down… along with Canva and ChatGPT!

Not ideal when you run an online tuition business. 😅

It was a real reminder of why backup plans and flexibility are so important when things go wrong.

🌐 Wednesday

On Wednesday, I started adding new photos to my website which felt really exciting.

There’s still lots more to add, but I’ve made a start and that’s what counts.

I also had a lovely meeting with some wonderful fellow tutors where we caught up and talked all things outsourcing, email marketing and sales.

I always come away from those conversations feeling supported and inspired.

✨ End of the Week

Tonight I’m off for a fancy dinner in Padstow using a voucher we were given for our wedding.

Over the weekend I’m going pottery painting 🏺and I’m finally going to see Wicked with my mum and sister… a day I’ve been looking forward to for the past year! 💚

We’ve been talking all about New Year resolutions (I know, it’s only November!!), goals, and what we’d love to change in both our businesses and our personal lives – as well as the things that might be holding us back.

I’ll be honest, I don’t like setting resolutions or big goals.

I think a lot of that comes from being scared to fail or not achieve them.

This is something I really want to get better at.

I’m reminding myself that if I don’t hit every goal, it’s OK... no one is going to tell me off!

This feels like a real mindset shift for me:

✅ It’s better to set bigger goals and have something to work towards...

❌ ...than to avoid setting them and just carry on as I am, scared of not achieving them.

And I see the same thing with my tuition students.

So many are cautious about thinking big when it comes to exams, grades and progress – they’re worried about “aiming too high” in case they don’t get there.

But it’s absolutely OK to want more for yourself.

We can set a big goal and break it down into small, doable steps.

If your child is nervous about aiming for a certain grade in school, this is exactly the kind of mindset work we do alongside the work in my lessons. 💛

I loved being a classroom teacher.

But over time, I didn’t realise how bogged down I’d become - the inspections, risk assessments, and endless box-ticking took me away from what mattered most: the children. �📚

�When I moved down to Cornwall, I was fortunate (and surprised!) to be offered voluntary redundancy.

Great timing for me!

�I also knew I couldn’t jump straight into a full-time teaching post or I’d miss out on my redundancy pay… no thank you!

�That pause made me notice how much of my spark had faded.

�Teaching had stopped being about learning and progress… and started being about paperwork. �🗂️

This week was different. ✨

I’ve been working from my parents’ house in Devon, surrounded by goats, horses, cats and sheep. 🐐🐴🐈‍⬛🐑

A change of scenery always resets me , and I’m so grateful that my work can travel with me wherever I am.

😓 This week was sad.

I’ve said goodbye to my GCSE retake students. The last couple of months have been intense… they’ve worked their socks off and sat their exams. Now we wait until January. Whatever the results say, I’m proud of their effort and determination to keep going #when their confidence has been knocked. 💪

This week, I reached a big milestone. 🎉

This month, Tutoring with Portia hit a milestone I never imagined when I started with one student alongside classroom teaching during Covid. Five years on, it’s become a real career… not just for me, but for other wonderful teachers I’ve supported in stepping out of the classroom too. Feeling proud and very grateful 🙏.

And some real honesty for balance.

For every highlight you see here, there are lows: tough moments, lonely moments, moments I question whether I’m doing my best.

That’s normal.

When your child is stuck on a problem, what’s their first move?

When working with my students, we use this simple “I’m stuck!” plan that your child can use anywhere 👇

Pause, breathe, and try these steps:

1. Pause and re-read. Underline key numbers and words.

2. Sketch or set up. ✍️ Quick diagram. Jot what’s given and what’s being asked.

3. Match the topic. 🔎 “Does this look like fractions, percentages, equations, area, ratio?” Pick the right toolkit.

4. Start small. Simplify a number, list what you know, and write out the information as an equation.

5. Sense-check. Do the size and units make sense?

When your child is stuck on a problem, what’s their first move?

When working with my students, we use this simple “I’m stuck!” plan that your child can use anywhere 👇

Pause, breathe, and try these steps:

1. Pause and re-read. Underline key numbers and words.

2. Sketch or set up. ✍️ Quick diagram. Jot what’s given and what’s being asked.

3. Match the topic. 🔎 “Does this look like fractions, percentages, equations, area, ratio?” Pick the right toolkit.

4. Start small. Simplify a number, list what you know, and write out the information as an equation.

5. Sense-check. Do the size and units make sense?

Two weeks ago, I attended The Tutors’ Association National Tutors’ Conference.

It was a brilliant day - full of energy, ideas, and plenty of chats with fellow tutors about all things tuition. ⚡

I joined several insightful sessions led by experts in our industry 💡 and came away with practical ideas I’m excited to implement. ✅

👉 Back to it for Autumn Term 2 and the energy has been brilliant.

🤩 Our GCSE retake students sat English and maths exams this week (well done you!) and I’m cheering them on for the final two maths papers still to come.

😬 As a tutor it’s always a bit nerve-wracking, but hearing their post-exam reflections and seeing their dedication reminds me why I do this.

💜 Behind the scenes at Tutoring with Portia, I’ve been planning for the New Year: mapping revision blocks, refining resources, and getting ready to welcome a couple more team members (watch this space!).

🎄I’ve also started the Christmas prep (eek!) and put plans in place to take some time off at the end of the year for our honeymoon. 🥰

Heading off after a wonderful few days at the TTA National Tutors’ Conference in London.

It was such a full-on (but brilliant!) day, and by the end I was absolutely exhausted! 😴

I spent yesterday recharging, wandering around London and finding some much-needed comfort food from Borough Market. 🍝

The talks at the conference were inspiring and gave me plenty of new ideas to take away and reflect on.

👉 But, the best part?

Meeting up with some of my amazing tutor friends in real life! 💜 Some I’d met before, but many I’d only ever chatted to online.

It’s such a special feeling being surrounded by like-minded tutors and business owners.

These people truly understand what it’s like to be in this world. We’re always sharing ideas freely, supporting one another, and celebrating each other’s wins.

Even though we’re technically competitors, it never feels that way.

We’re a community.

Thank you for letting me be part of it. 💛
