Nicola

I am a 31-year English teacher with nearly 10 years of teaching experience. I have a First Class Honours degree in English and Education Studies and have taught English at a large Secondary school in Greater Manchester for the past 8 years where I was also the Whole School Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead from 2020-2023. In October 2023 I left the classroom to pursue my career in tutoring and spend more time with my baby boy.

I am extremely passionate about building confidence and resilience within students and providing them with the tools needed to access the English curriculum whilst enjoying it too.

Whilst I understand the importance of passing exams and academic achievement, I believe a students' mental health and well-being is an absolute priority in their teenage years and so I ensure that students feel comfortable working with me by being a personable, friendly and empathetic tutor.

When I was at school I struggled immensely with Maths. My confidence was at an all-time low when it came to any aspect of Maths and I had a completely closed mindset when it came to being able to make any progress. My Mum tried but soon found herself at a loss as to how to help me progress so she got me a tutor. I saw this tutor on a weekly basis and genuinely believe that it was the confidence she instilled within me (through language and positive reinforcement methods) alone that took me from a predicted E grade to achieving a B in my Maths GCSE. She believed that I could achieve and she made me believe that too - this is the exact approach I take when tutoring my own students now!

I have experience working with students with a range of students with SEND and plan lessons and resources to ensure that they are inclusive and accessible.

I am a trained Mental Health First Aider (MHFA England) and completed my Senior Mental Health Lead training with Creative Education in May 2022.

I thoroughly enjoy working with young people and look forward to making progress with students on their KS3/KS4 English journeys!
