Tutor Requirements

To become a tutor with Tutoring with Portia, we require you:

To be self-employed

You will be working on a self-employed basis. Tutors are responsible for paying their own income tax and must be registered as self-employed. Tutoring with Portia runs as a sole trader; therefore, Portia cannot offer PAYE to tutors.

To have the right to work in the UK

Tutors must have the right to work in the UK.

To have the necessary qualifications

Tutors must be a qualified teacher with Qualified Teacher Status. Alternatively, you must have an undergraduate degree in your subject. 

To be able to deliver tailored online lessons

Tutors must ensure that they have the correct equipment to provide online lessons. This includes a PC/laptop, a fast internet connection, HD webcam, microphone and bright lighting.

To be a kind, patient and enthusiastic tutor

At Tutoring with Portia, our tutors act as positive role models to our students, becoming an influential figure in maths and English. 

To have an Enhanced DBS

Tutors must hold a current DBS (the update service is recommended). Tutors must give Portia permission to perform a DBS Status Check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be employed?

No, you will be working on a self-employed basis and must have the right to work in the UK. Tutors are responsible for paying their own income tax and must be registered as self-employed. Tutoring with Portia runs as a sole trader; therefore, Portia cannot offer PAYE to tutors.

What will I be paid?

Tutors will set their own hourly and half-hourly rates. Tutoring with Portia will take a commission on top of this to cover advertising and admin costs.

How does payment work?

Tutors must invoice Portia after lessons have been taught. This can be done weekly or monthly. Payment will then be made to the tutor by bank transfer.

Do I need to be a qualified teacher?

You do not need to be a qualified teacher; however, some parents do prefer this. As long as you have the appropriate qualifications and experience to teach your subject, then that is fine.

Do I need tuition experience?

You will need some tuition or teaching experience before becoming a member of our team.

Do I need an enhanced DBS?

Tutors must hold a current DBS (the update service is recommended). Tutors must give Portia permission to perform a DBS Status Check.

Do I have to tutor over the holidays?

Student are booked in for a particular term-time time slot. ·The usual schedule does not apply to the holidays. However, holiday lessons may be scheduled upon parent request, depending on the tutor’s availability.

How will I know when my booked lessons are?

You will have a shared calendar with Portia that will contain all of your booked and paid for lessons.

Do parents pay in advance?

Parents pay for a month's block of lessons at a time. This is always paid in advance at the end of the previous month. Therefore you will never go into a lesson that has not been paid for.

How many hours a week will I work?

You can work as many or as few hours a week. You will set your availability and Portia will try and find you students to fill this. However, can't guarantee that we will be able to find you any students.

How will I contact the parents?

After the first lesson, the tutor will be copied into a follow-up email with the student’s parent. From then on, they will be able to contact the parents over email. With the parent’s and tutor’s permission, Portia will set up a WhatsApp group. This will be a place for the tutor to also provide feedback and answer questions and queries that the parent may have.

Can I take holiday?

Of course! You will be expected to be available for term times; however, the odd holiday is allowed as long as Portia is given plenty of notice.

What platform will I use for online tuition?

All online lessons will take place over the tutor's chosen platform which has been agreed with Portia.

What will I need to be an online tutor?

Tutors must ensure that they have the correct equipment to provide online lessons. This includes a PC/laptop, a fast internet connection, HD webcam, a microphone and bright lighting.

Is there a cancellation policy?

If a student cancels within 48 hours of the start of the lesson, full payment will be taken. This will be enforced at Portia’s discretion.
